This month’s mix comes with a title. Epic Slow Burner. It’s been in the works since last July. In my final days of living in Boston, I had started a mix, pairing up the first two tracks: Yo La Tengo’s late night drive “Blue-Green Arrow” and the hazy Sunday afternoon that is Desolation Wilderness’ “Come Over In Your Silver Car”. Quickly, the concept was there - a mix made up of only 9 songs, each not shorter than 5 minutes, each slow moving, slow burning.
The end result took me nine months to put together. Coming up with seven more songs to follow the first two. Adding. Subtracting. Gestating. The final product is easily one of my favorite things I have ever done, honestly, with the nine selected songs running just under an hour. And no, it was not by my knowledge that three of the first four songs would all clock in at 5:42. Super coincidence.
Wait ‘til midnight to play this one. Wait until summer. Wait until the moment is right for this one. And maybe that moment is right now. All for you to decide.
